Coconut oil has been a household staple across South India for generations, in the kitchen, the bathroom and everywhere in between. A good bottle of pure, wood pressed coconut oil is one of the most versatile things you can keep at home. Here are five everyday uses that have nothing to do with cooking.
1. A weekly hair oil massage
Warm a few spoons of coconut oil, massage it into your scalp and the length of your hair, and leave it on for an hour or overnight before washing. It's the classic champi ritual: it helps reduce dryness and frizz and leaves hair soft and manageable.
2. A simple body moisturiser
Apply a thin layer on slightly damp skin right after a bath to lock in moisture. It works especially well on dry elbows, knees and heels. If you have very oily or acne-prone skin, use it on your body rather than your face.
3. Oil pulling
An age-old practice: swish a tablespoon of coconut oil around your mouth for 5–10 minutes in the morning, spit it into the bin (not the sink, as it can solidify), then brush as usual. Many people find it leaves their mouth feeling fresh. It's a complement to brushing and flossing, not a replacement.
4. Gentle make-up remover and lip balm
A few drops on a cotton pad melt away kajal and make-up easily. Follow with your usual face wash. A tiny dab also works as a natural lip balm on dry, chapped lips.
5. Care for wooden kitchenware
Wooden spoons, chopping boards and rolling pins dry out and crack over time. Rub in a thin coat of coconut oil, let it soak in overnight and wipe off the excess. They'll look better and last longer.
